Queen Awards

RIAA (Usa)

The RIAA Gold and Platinum Awards program was launched in 1958 in an effort to create a standard by which to measure sales of a sound recording. In the beginning, there was only a Gold album award for the sale of 500,000 copies. As the industry grew, other awards were developed. The Platinum award (1,000,000 sold) was created in 1976 and with the advent of the compact disc and the subsequent increase in sales, the Multi Platinum award was created in 1984. On March 16, 1999, the RIAA launched the Diamond Awards, honoring sales of 10 million copies or more of an album or single.

How to recognize a US award.
Record Awards are the original Gold and Platinum awards presented to music industry individuals for their help and support in breaking or developing an artist. The industry has created a few different formats for the presentation of these awards over the years. RIAA certified formats are as follows:

White Matte
The first style done from the 60's through the mid 70's. The matte is a off-white color. The frame is wood. Gold LP, presentation plate and LP mini cover is under the edge of the matte. The RIAA logo is printed or stamped on the plate. The piece was manufactured by the New York Frame and Picture Company. There's no Queen white matte award reported so far.

Floater
This format was prevalent from about 1976 to 1980. Gold or silver wood  frame (depending if award is gold or platinum) with a black matte is indicative of this era. The LP mini and presentation plate is under the LPand has a spacer behind them to give a "Floating" affect. The RIAA  insignia is printed or stamped on the plate.

 Strip Plate

Strip plate format is typical of 1981- 1984. This format is similar to the  “Floater” format described above, except the LP mini is on the same plate that the presentation and RIAA seal is on and the RIAA logo is printed or stamped on the plate.

Hologram
From 1984 to present. The Hologram awards are more common. The RIAA logo is in hologram form and changed from a round style to an "R" style about 1988. The frame is typically Black. The Hologram record  awards are produced with LP and Cassette, LP only, LP, cassette and  CD and CD only combinations.

Custom award, especially in USA are special awards made by RIAA with different size or with special promo picture inside. They are very beautiful and very rare, usually made for special occasion like group's conferences etc..

Unique ANATO set of 5 custom awards: one for each band member and one presented to the gropu. They feature special ANATO print and additional picture of each member inside. One of the most beatiful set of awards. Thanks to Bas Asselbergs for picture.

RIAA Innuendo customized award. This one of the most beutiful Queen awards. It came with signatures from all the band. One of the last item signed by Freddie.

This special custom award was presented by RIAA to important radios in the USA which helped Innuendo get Gold status airing the LP . It come with a Queen Production headed letter in which Queen thanks american support. Letter is signed by all four dated June 1991.  Again one  of the very last Freddie's  official signatures.

The above is a custom RIAA award made to commemorate all the Queen Sale in USA. It was issued in a certain number of copies and sometime it appears on sale on ebat. It's from 2005.

There are also record company "In house" awards that do not bear the RIAA logo.  Most have the relevant record company logo in it's place.In-house style can vary.

BPI UK
BPI (The British Phonographic Industry) certified awards were originally introduced in April 1973 to measure the performance of individual records based on sales to the trade each week. Qualification for albums was initially on the basis of revenue received by manufacturers, and probably in January 1979 the BPI abolished the old monetary system for albums and replaced it with a unit system. This brought album awards into line with singles and also with other countries where qualification levels are based on unit sales. Multi platinum awards, introduced in February 1987, are any multiple of the platinum level, e.g. album quadruple platinum status = 1.2m.

In house UK original Record award can be found. The are not commissioned by BPI but from the Record Company or the band/artist. They were produced from the same company which did the bpi ones. So same frame, same plaque same everything-- the only thing missing is the BPI logo but they are genuine items.

Flash Gordon "UK In House award" presented to Alan Douglas (Mix down engineering for the album)

Remember that it's quite sure that UK awards have the original records coated while RIAA (usa ones) may use also a different record but with the original label.

OTHER COUNTRIES

Of course also different countries in the world issued their record award to comemorate the sale of a band within their borbers. The are very diificult to find!!  They rarely follow a scheme in the structure of the award. So there are often customized award wihc are really fabolous.
